Mumbai-based Zone Startups India, which is the Mumbai location of the Toronto-based Ryerson Futures Inc. has launched a six-week accelerator for women focused on building technology-based ventures. Ryerson Futures Inc. is the technology accelerator and investment arm of Ryerson University.
Zone StartupsIndia is a collaboration between BSE Institute (a subsidiary of the Bombay Stock Exchange), Ryerson University’s Digital Media Zone (incubator), Ryerson Futures Inc and Simon Fraser University, British Columbia, Canada. Zone Startups India currently accommodates over 55 desk and houses 60 startups.
The programme, empoWer, will shortlist 15 woman entrepreneurs. The programme will be supported by partners including Google, the Department of Science and Technology, GIZ, Vodafone India and SheEO, which is a Toronto-based organisation supporting woman entrepreneurs. Ajay Ramasubramaniam, director of Zone Startups India, said in a statement:
“Through our accelerator programme, and various bootcamps, workshops, demo days hosted by us, we realized the need for having a focused programme that works with woman entrepreneurs in tech businesses,”
The programme will focus startups solving local issues, along with enabling them to create systems based on artificial intelligence and high-tech devices that could be converted into global products.The programme duration will be around six-week, and post the duration, Zone Startups plans to provide the woman entrepreneurs continued support for up to a year. The accelerator also plans to scout for the applicants by means of road shows across Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi NCR.
According to the Ramasubramaniam, in just more than a year of operations, the venture has accelerated the growth of 72 startups, 11 of which have been co-founded by woman entrepreneurs. Ramasubramaniam claims that 3 of these women have gone on to raise more than 30 crore.
