Virtualisation and cloud infrastructure VMware has acquired Arkin, a software-defined data center security and operations firm.
Arkin is expected to join VMware’s Cloud Management Business Unit, a team of people responsible for VMware’s vRealize Management Suite.
It was already a NSX partner with VMware since 2015. VMware NSX is a network virtualization platform launched during VMworld. The software is reportedly able to operate using any hypervisor and most networking hardware.
“Arkin is a great fit for VMware and its customers as we look to accelerate our growth businesses including cloud management and network virtualization,”
said Ajay Singh, senior vice president and general manager, cloud management business unit, VMware.
Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but Arkin is likely to bolster VMware’s software-defined data center lineup. The Arkin purchase is likely to close in the second quarter.
Arkin was launched three years ago by three IITians, Shiv Agarwal, Rohit Toshniwal and Mukul Gupta, with an advisory board that consisted of industry luminaries including Alan Cohen (CCO at Illumio and formerly VP Marketing at Nicira), Dheeraj Pandey (Founder and CEO, Nutanix) and Denis Murphy (VP Sales, Nimble Storage).
Arkin brings two important capabilities to VMware. It extends the cross-domain visibility of VMware vRealize Operations to more of the SDDC infrastructure. From compute and storage to networking and security – across network overlays and underlays.
Organizations globally are adopting a software-defined data center (SDDC) architecture based on VMware virtualized infrastructure and management to deliver automation, security and continuity for applications. SDDC breaks down the barriers between traditionally disparate domains of compute, networking and storage.
Arkin also helps IT organizations with planning and compliance management for NSX micro-segmentation.
Shiv Agarwal, co-founder and chief executive officer, Arkin said
“Arkin and VMware have been great partners and we’re now excited to join the VMware family to take Arkin to the next level,Arkin delivers a new operations paradigm that has been built from the ground up for VMware NSX network virtualization and is fully aligned with the core NSX use cases of IT automation, security and application continuity.”
“While it is an amazing success for the Arkin team and great return for all investors, we will miss participating in building out the technology platform that is transforming the modus operandi of IT infrastructure. VMware is a great partner for Arkin, since they understand this need and will be able to fully leverage the technology and the work that has been done to date,”
said Jishnu Bhattacharjee, Managing Director at Nexus Venture Partners.
