10 Time-tested strategies for achieving your goals
Since the time when we were little kids, everysingle day we world be given some goals to acheive, things like daily homeworks, projects and what not. These, though not called so explictly, were goals. Sometimes we would be able to acheive them, sometime we wouldn’t and at times we would give up just before the finish line. As we grow up, the goals turn more serious and have a greater impact on our lives and career and well being. Leaving a little scope of not being able to acheive and carrying on without a care in the world. Because these goals are not being thrown upon us, these are goals that we have pulled in for ourselves, we must make sure that we reach the finish line and in style!
The factors that I believe are most important are- setting the right goals and setting the goals right. In this article we will talk about the right strategies for being able to achieve your goals. If you pick up the right approach it is only a matter of when and not if.
1. Set SMART goals
Whenever you set out to create a goal for urself, keep this mantra in your mind- “Is my goal smart?”. Specific, Meaningful, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound- is your goal does not haved any of these parameters then its time to rethink. Moving one step forward, you can make your goals SMARTER by adding Evaluation and Re-adjustment as and when required. Be as specific as you can.
2. Action Plan
Once you set your goal, planning for it is the next most important step. Create a detailed action plaan and work on it on a daily basis. Revisit it and make changes as you deem fit. Remember don’t stick to the initial plan; as you, at that point of time would not know about the future situations that you may face. Be flexible so that you plan is not just a dummy plan that suits just the perfect conditions.
3. Self-discipline is the key
Self-discipline is the key to acheive anything and everything. When you have self discipline following the action plan becomes easy for you and you also cut out on your bad habbits that would other wise waste your time and hence deter you from acheiving your goal. Habits such as waking up early, practicing gratitude, eating healthy, exercising and getting ample sleep help to instill that much-needed self-discipline into our lives. With the right set of habits in your life, you are almost there.
4. Cut out on distractions
Distractions are the most common reason why a lot of us are not able to acheive our goals. The most common form of distraction are the smart phones. With the constant inflow of information and notifications, it is very tempting to loose focus on the goal and that reduces the productivity considerably. To stay focussed while you are working you might choose to put your phone away or atleast not connected to the internet.
5. Set your goals on a daily basis
No matter how big your final goal is, analyse and divide it into Daily goals.. This will help you feel motivated at the end of the day, when you know that you have achieved a milestone of your ultimate goal. This also helps you stay on track and be able to re-adjust as and when required. early morning is a great time to set your daily goals. Out of all the goals for the day, take up the Most Important items in your list first.
6. Avoid procrastination
“I will do it later”.. if you want to achieve your goals, this sentence should be completely shunned out. Procrastination is the silent killer, that takes you away from your goals. Procrastination is again a form of lack of discipline. Take action rather than wait another day or moment to do what should be done now.
7. Time management
Those who can manage their time can achieve the toughest of goals. But for this you need to know how to manage your time well. There are 4 buckets that you need to categorize everything into. These are
- Important and Urgent – mostly Short Term Crises and Problems
- Important but not Urgent – Long Term Strategic golas
- Urgent but not Important – mostly distractions and interruptions
- Not Important and Not Urgent – time wasting activities
8. Failure are welcome
Some of the most famous entrepreneurs have failed and failed miserably before they finally succeded. The only difference between them and the ones who did succeed is just that they didn’t stop trying. Whenever you fail, Accept it. Understand it. Learn from it. Then move past it. Leverage them as a learning experience for you to start again, and this time more intelligently.
9. Be inspired
One of the most important factors that help you give your 100% to an objective is being positive. With we are not positive our energies are a lot less and hence everything seems difficult. To get your daily doze of positivity read about people who inspire you, read about their journey and how they overcame obstacles, understand their thought process.
